The Selkie Name

The myth of the Selkie has long been a part of the folklore of Scotland's Northern Isles. These creatures, also known as therianthropes, are said to have the ability to shift forms from a seal to a human by shedding their seal skin. In human form, Selkies are described as being incredibly beautiful, with their allure often leading to tragic outcomes in the stories that feature them.

This fascinating and enduring legend served as the inspiration for Selkie whisky, a blend of malt whiskies from multiple distilleries. The idea of a Selkie's transformation, from one form to another, seemed a perfect fit for a whisky that is itself a blend of different malt whiskies. In addition, the beauty and longing that is often associated with Selkies in folklore is something that we sought to capture in this whisky.

Each batch of Selkie whisky is a non-chill filtered blend of malt whiskies, carefully crafted to provide a unique and enjoyable drinking experience. Due to the limited nature of the production, with only a few hundred bottles produced per batch. Each batch of Selkie is a rare and special treat for those lucky enough to get their hands on it. Whether you are a fan of mythical creatures or simply enjoy a good whisky, Selkie is sure to capture your affections.

The Design

We wanted to bring a modern look to this blended malt and honour an old Scottish Myth. After we had agreed on the name and theme, my designer Ryan & I set about looking for an appropriate artist. I have had a long love of music and its associated artwork, a group of Italian artists I knew for their silk screen print poster art stood out. I approached the artists at Malleus and they graciously agreed. We couldn’t have been happier with the illustration they created for us. Its atmosphere captures the essence of many of the selkie stories I had read. Ryan then worked his magic with type and layout and the Selkie was born.
